Attended by the Mayor of Scarborough, Councillor John Blackburn, Mrs Blackburn, and Robert Goodwill, MP for Scarborough and Whitby.



The first half consisted of Let all the world in every corner sing (Vaughan Williams), Zadok the Priest (Handel), Great is the Lord written in 1912 by Elgar, and Musicks Empire by York composer Richard Shephard which was specially commissioned by the Society to celebrate this centenary year.
The second half consisted of a performance of Requiem Mass in D minor K,626 by Mozart.

This concert included a wide range of seasonal items including Christmas music from anonymous mediaeval carols to contemporary offerings by Chilcott and Rutter. Of particular interest were the carols which are still traditionally sung around Sheffield and Derbyshire. Two of the carols were accompanied by a small instrumental ensemble in the West Gallery tradition. This was followed by Adiemus from Karl Jenkins' Songs of Sanctuary. 

There were Christmas readings from Anthony Halford, Alwyn Nendick, Dorothy Berry, and Martin Dodgson, and solo and ensemble contributions from Roger Gibson, Joanne Gibson, Caroline Lester, Barbara Shaw, Lucy Stainthorpe, and Tom Swain.

Guests of the choir were the Hunmanby Silver Band conducted by Ernie Marsden who gave a medley of Christmas tunes, and joined with the choir in the very enjoyable Christmas Fantasy by Gordon Langford. The choir was conducted throughout by Evelyn Halfortd, accompaniment provided by Frank James.

2011 Bach's St Matthew Passion

15 & 16 May

The first performance was in St Mary's Church, Scarborough conducted by Evelyn Halford, and the second was in Bridlington Priory conducted by Alan Dance.

The principal soloists were Michael Solomon Williams (tenor) Evangelist, Alex Murphy (bass) Christus, Felicity \Murphy (soprano), Claire Williams (contralto), Jamie Stark and Matthew Walton (basses). There was an orchestra of Friends of the Societies, the organ was played by Hugh Penny, and the harpsichord continuo was by Frank James.



18 Dec 2010 - Christmas Concert 'What Sweeter Music' - Westborough Methodist Church.

The programme consisted of The Christmas Story by Heinrich Schutz accompanied by a small orchestra, and a selection of Christmas carols and seasonal readings.

Soloists - Roger Gibson (tenor), Joanne Gibson (soprano), Matthew Walton (bass), Jonathan Wood (cello). Readers were Anthony Halford and Martin Dodgson. Accompanist was Frank James and the conductor was Evelyn Halford


May 14 2010 - 'Mozart in May'  St Andrew's United Reformed Church

Choral Society - Vesperae Solennes de Dominica KV321 conducted by Evelyn Halford, accompanied by Frank James (organ).

Soloists - Judith Hartley (soprano), Claire Woodhead (alto), Roger Gibson (tenor), and Martin Richardson (bass).  

A group of pieces was performed by the Bridlington Handbell Ringers, also conducted by Evelyn Halford. There were solo contributions from choir members Tom Swain (clarinet), Sheila Silvester (mezzo soprano), Matthew Wallace (bass), and Frank James (clavichord).


April 24 2010 - Handel's Messiah  - Westborough Methodist Church

Soloists - Bethany Seymour - soprano, Edward McMullen - counter-tenor, Peter Davoren - tenor, and Louis Hurst - bass. The continuo was Frank James and the solo trumpeters were Rebecca and Philip Robertson. The Orchestra of Friends was led by Tony Mason and the conductor was Evelyn Halford.



19 December 2009 - Peace on Earth - Westborough Methodist Church

Choral suite from The Armed Man - A Mass for Peace by Karl Jenkins and Christmas music on the theme of The Stable. The accompanist was Frank James and the conductor was Evelyn halford.  


4 APRIL 2009 - Westborough Methodist Church - Brahms German Requiem.

Conducted by Evelyn Halford. The soloists were Bethany Seymour (Soprano) and Gregory Batsleer (Baritone). Frank James played the organ, and the timpanist was Paul Midgely.


December 13 2008. Christmas concert - St. Columba's Church - With The Bridlington Priory Handbell Ringers

Extracts from Benjamin Britten's St Nicolas and seasonal music was performed by both choir and the handbell ringers. The soloists were Roger Gibson, Lucy Stainthorpe. Michael Lester, Rosamund Taylor, Charlotte Turner and the narrator was David Keeton. The accompanist was Frank James (organ) and the conductor was Evelyn Halford.


November 8 2008 - A Baroque Concert - Westborough Methodist Church

Purcell's Ode on St.Cecilia's Day and Handel Coronation Anthems

soloists - Rosemary Carlton-Willis (soprano), Christopher Jacklin (counter-tenor), Rachel Payne (alto). Hilary Watts (tenor), Clive Constance (bass), former choir member Jamie Stark (bass) and The Cecilian Players.

Frank  James (harpsichord) accompanied recording artist Edwina Smith (baroque flute) in music by Handel, Telemann, and Vivaldi. The conductor was our new musical director, Evelyn Halford.

Rossini Petite Messe Solonnelle

Soloists - Bethany Seymour, soprano; Cara Curran, mezzo-soprano; Peter Davoren, tenor and Michael Brunsden, bass. The harmonioum was played by Hugh Penny, the piano by Frank James and the conductor was Michael Lester.


December 16th 2007 - Choral Society & Scarborough Symphony Orchestra -The Grand Hall, Scarborough Spa

Haydn Te Deum in C , the Shepherds' Farewell from L'Enfance du Christ by Berlioz and some popular carol arrangements with orchestral accompaniment. The conductor was Shaun Matthew.


November 24th 2007 - A concert dedicated to the memory of Lynn Haigh, one of our committee members - Westborough Methodist Church.

"Music's Praise" - A Celebration of English Music.

Purcell Verse Anthem O God, Thou art my God, two Coronation Anthems by Handel, The King shall Rejoice and Zadok the Priest, followed by the Handel Flute Sonata in A minor for flute and continuo. The first half closed with Songs of the Fleet by Stanford. In the second half were Music's Praise by Michael Hurd and Five Mystical Songs by Vaughan Williams.

Soloists - Catherine Sign - flute and David Bowden - baritone. The accompanist was Frank James and the conductor Michael Lester.


March 31st 2007 - Westborough Methodist Church 

The Passion of Our Lord according to St. Mark by Charles Wood and a perfomance of John Rutter's Requiem.

Soloists - Bethany Seymour (soprano), William Knight (tenor) and James Ryan (bass). The organist was Frank James, the timpanist, Paul Midgely and the conductor was Michael Lester. 


December 2nd 2006 - Christmas concert

Vaughan Williams Fantasia on Christmas Carols and the Christmas section of  Handel's Messiah. The soloists were David Bowden (bass) and Rachel Penny (soprano). Followed by groups of carols were interspersed with seasonal readings by members of Scarbough Poetry Circle. The accompanist was Frank James and the conductor Michael Lester.


October 14th 2006 - 250th Anniversary celebrations of the birth of Mozart - Westborough Methodist Church

Vesperae Solennes de Confessore K 339, Ave Verum Corpus and the Little Organ Mass of Haydn. There were also two solos by our soprano soloist Rachel Jagger, a former member of the choir whose father Hugh Penny was conductor for several years. Conducted by Michael Lester.


May 20th 2006 - The Choral Society & Northstead Junior School Choir  

"Maytime Miscellany" Concert Room, Scarborough Library

The Choral Society performed several part-songs, madrigals and rounds, and Music's Praise by Michael Hurd. The concert finmished with a perfomance by the combined choirs of Captain Noah's Floating Zoo by Michael Flanders and Joseph Horovitz. The accompanist was Michael Lester and the conductor Frank James.


April 22 2006 - Westborough Church

Haydn's Creation, featuring soloists drawn from the choir, and accompanied by a chamber orchestra directed from the harpsichord by Frank James.


December 17th 2005 - Choral Society & Scarborough Symphony Orchestra

Conducted by Shaun Matthew, in the New Hall, Scarborough College (in Filey Road, Scarborough). The programme included the huge and splendid Symphony 2 by Mendelssohn, which ends with the "Lobgesang" ("Song of Praise") cantata.
